I could simply say the answer is God and we would be done with it wouldn’t we. However, I also need to explain why my final answer is God. Even if I wouldn’t need to explain this answer unfortunately we live in a world where God is never the final answer or even an answer for that matter and hence the need to explain why and hopefully after you are done reading this I will have made the case for why the final answer is God and why your mantra from now if it wasn’t already should be “God is most glorified in you when you are most satisfied in Him.”
So, let’s start by basically saying that God is absolutely sovereign in all He does. He is the most glorious and majestic being in all the universe and there is nothing or anyone above Him. Why do I need to bring that point across, this is because been happy in God is only possible if you believe in His absolute SOVEREIGNTY. This is because true happiness is not possible unless the reason you are happy is because nothing and no one can destroy that happiness.
Happiness Shouldn’t Negate Suffering
Thus before I can continue we need to define what true happiness in yourself is and the good thing about it is that one thing that the world does right in defining is true happiness in oneself and well it is basically a level of happiness that is so wholesome that nobody else can hinder it. As much as this is also true for our walk in Christ, it couldn’t be way more different when it comes to their brevity. The problem with the concept of true happiness in yourself from a worldly perspective is simply negates a lot of factors, let’s start with the most obvious factor it negates, SUFFERING. The world’s concept of happiness tends to forget that suffering and evil being done against you is a common trait in this world as no one is perfect and that is why when anything goes wrong for us everything about our composure goes off the rails. This is why emotions such as anger, hopelessness, anxiety and so much more manifest in us thus making the happiness we had worked so hard to obtain basically pointless. However, let us look at this from a Biblical perspective and we shall use the two best examples possible which are Jesus and Paul. These two men are the two most important figures in Christianity with Jesus been our only way to salvation while Paul was a vile sinner saved by God’s grace thus proving that no one is beyond God’s election. However, from a worldly perspective you could say they lived horrifying lives because they weren’t wealthy and also, they suffered a lot and died horrible deaths with one being nailed on the cross while another was beheaded for the sole reason of believing in a risen Christ. If you saw this from a worldly perspective, you’d be inclined to say that there is no way they were happy but I would be inclined to happily disagree with you as despite what happened to them they were the happiest people around and the reason for their happiness in themselves and in others is answered in Philippians 3:8-9 where Paul say he counts everything as loss and rubbish in order to know and gain God. From this Paul shows that he didn’t create his own happiness but rather God made Paul happy in Him.
The Sovereignty of God as the infallible source of Happiness
This now raises the question of how is it possible that even in their suffering they were still more joyous than all of us in the world today while also asking the question why does God Position Himself as the only Source of Infinite Joy. This brings us back to the sovereignty of God which as I said at the beginning is extremely crucial to you gaining true happiness. Why is it crucial? This is due to the fact when I defined true happiness I said it had to be infallible the problem is that no one in this world is infallible, the fact is we are actually easily fallible. However, Colossians 1:16-17 is one of the many verses that speak on the sovereignty of God and the only way God can be sovereign is if He is infallible that is why He seeks joy in Himself because He is well aware that if He was to value something else more than He values himself then He ceases to be the most valuable being in the universe and by result loses His sovereignty. Also, if God ceased to infallible then true happiness wouldn’t exist because we would have nothing infallible to cling on to. This is why Paul praised the sovereignty of God time and time again in his letters, because he knew if he didn’t praise that sovereignty then God wouldn’t be glorified in His people as the source of all happiness.
God doesn’t make us happy in Him because He lacks anything as we have seen He is absolutely sovereign. Rather, it is because of His sovereignty that He makes us to be happy in Him because even in our suffering we are happy as we are not basing our happiness on our own easily fallible lives but on the infallible, sovereign, all satisfying God. As being happy in Him is the capstone of our joy and His greatness as we shall be valuing the supremely valuable and you can’t be happy in yourself if you don’t value the supremely valuable which only exists in God.
Conclusion.
My hope and prayer is that as I conclude I have made the case as to why your only true source of happiness is not in yourself or the things of the world as these are fallible and will pass away but that your Source of Infinite Joy is in God as He is the only infallible, sovereign, all satisfying Source of Happiness and us being happy in Him not even in what He does for us brings about happiness in ourselves and in others because we aren’t clinging to the fallible but to the infallibility of His Sovereignty. From this I believe your mantra is now “God is most glorified in you when you are most satisfied in Him.”
